A healthy 2009 in Mawson Lakes

Walking

It's a new year and a fresh opportunity for us all to take a little better care of ourselves so that we can keep enjoying our families and our surroundings with the best of possible health on our side in 2009.

A part of these plans may well include some new or added physical activity or just maintenance of what we have achieved in 2008.

In order to make available more information which may impact those decisions we invite all fitness/ physical exercise - sport groups or instructors who are based or meeting in Mawson Lakes regularly to submit their contact details and a brief overview of their training and facilities for possible inclusion in our February newsletter.

Please email submissions to: shendell.camilleri@lendlease.com

(photos/logo may also be attached and editorial of no more than 40 words which may be further edited.)

To kick things off we are featuring the Mawson Lakes Walking Group in this edition.

Started off in May 2006 by Annie Payne of The Mawson Centre under the National Heart Foundation banner, the Walking Group has gone from strength to strength and is now meeting Monday to Thursday evenings at 7.15pm at the lakes edge, opposite the Boat Deck Cafe' for walks of approximately 45 minutes duration.

Elaine Alford was one of the first walkers to register when the group began walking with only 6 members and she took over as Walk Leader in April 2008. She has since worked out a variety of interesting walking trails around Mawson Lakes and the group has added a day walking session to their schedule on wednesday mornings at 9.30am meeting at the same spot.

Walking was listed as the most popular physical recreation activity amongst Australians aged 15 years and older (source: Participation in Sports and Recreation, Australia, 2005-06) and had a participation rate at that stage of more than twice the next most popular activity. Twice as many females walk for exercise as males and this too is the case in the local walking group.

To register to join the Mawson Lakes Walking Group please contact Annie Payne at The Mawson Centre on 83025449 or email apayne@salisbury.sa.gov.sa or Elaine on daytime 83438585
