Trees and shrubs are an important natural sink for reducing the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide as well as being esthetically pleasing. It takes about 5 trees in mature active growth to absorb a tonne of carbon dioxide per year. In early years and after full maturity (30 years) the amount absorbed is reduced. MLEW has an ongoing program to grow seedlings from seed as part of the long standing and successful Trees For Life program. We hope that from 2010 any trees grown by MLEW will be associated with orders from Salisbury Council and will be planted locally in Mawson Lakes or adjacent areas. Alternatively the trees will be planted by landholders locally and throughout the State.Volunteer growers raise native seedlings in their back yards over the summer months. The soil, seeds, propagation table and shade cloth are all provided. A space of only 1 square metre will be enough to grow 250 trees. No green thumb needed, just commitment to doing a good job and helping the environment. Local help is available.
