Mawson Lakes Town Centre upgrade approved

Construction on Mawson Lakes’ much-anticipated Town Centre upgrade will begin in the coming months after the $40 million Stage 2 development was approved by the Development Assessment Commission last month.

The upgrade is now on track for completion in 2013 and will expand the existing Stage 1 Town Centre, including a revamped full-line Woolworths supermarket, a discount department store, cafe, 40 new apartments and more than 1100m2 of additional retail space.

It will also add another 387 carparks and bicycle parking to the precinct.

Stage 2 is being developed by Adelaide-based Taplin Group of Companiesand they also manage the Mitcham Shopping Centre, Marden Shopping Centre, Marryatville Shopping Centre and recently completed the Bayside Village Shopping Centre at Glenelg.

Delfin Lend Lease Project Director Vince Rigter said the development approval was welcome news to Mawson Lakes’ residents, visitors and workers who would enjoy additional retail, living and entertainment options.

 “The Mawson Lakes Town Centre has already established itself as a vibrant retail, commercial and recreation hub for the region, with medical, childcare, recruitment , banking and other key services helping to service and attract the 4,500 workers and 7,500 students that frequent the community each day,” he said.

“By continuing to explore opportunities for integrating residential, retail and commercial precincts into the community, Mawson Lakes has fostered a lively urban centre that is a highly attractive destination.”

Developer Andrew Taplin said businesses had already recognised the opportunities available within the precinct.

“We’ve already had strong enquiry from businesses interested in leasing tenancies in Stage 2 of the Mawson Lakes Town Centre, so we’re eager to get construction under way,” he said.

“Having developed and managed other retail precincts across Adelaide, we have the experience needed to ensure we enhance the Mawson Lakes Town Centre.”

The 620ha Mawson Lakes community was developed by Delfin Lend Lease and the Land Management Corporation.   Just 12 kilometres north of the Adelaide CBD, almost 12,000 residents in over 4,000 homes call the community home.

Over 30% of the community is dedicated to 189ha of open space including parks, nature reserves, sports fields, playgrounds and waterways including a village lake.  Over 26 kilometres of hike and bike trails connect the community with various amenities including the $20 million town centre, The Promenade.
