 The Denison Centre
After two years of planning and construction, the $4.0M Mawson Lakes School Community Hall/Gymnasium Facility has been completed. This information kindly supplied by Alan Peucker:
The new facility was funded through a $3.0M grant from the Federal Government’s BER Program and a generous $1.0M donation from the Mawson Lakes Community Trust Fund.
The facility will be named after Cape Denison in the Antarctic, location of the famous explorer and geologist, Sir Douglas Mawson’s main base, after whom the suburb of Mawson Lakes was named.
The new facility will be called “The Denison Centre – community, learning and leisure”.
The name Denison, also has links to the four main teaching buildings on the Garden Tce Campus of Mawson Lakes School, which were named after the ships that Sir Douglas Mawson used on his expeditions to the Antarctic. These buildings were called Discovery, Nimrod, Aurora and Toroa.
The Denison Centre is a wonderful example of the school and the community working together to develop a high quality, multi-purpose facility, which will benefit everyone in the community.
The new facility will house a full size hall/gymnasium, two classrooms, two community rooms, toilets and showers, a kitchen, three large storerooms and a spacious entrance foyer. The facility is fully air-conditioned and fitted out with a full range of recreational equipment.
The new facility will be managed by Mawson Lakes School in partnership with City of Salisbury, who is acting on behalf of the community.
The facility was designed by Russell & Yelland Architects and constructed by Hindmarsh Pty Ltd, both of whom have done a wonderful job in bringing the project in on time and on budget.
The new facility will be handed over to the school by the end of August and officially opened later in the year.
